Notes
General:
Howard Chandler Saturley of Concord passed away on Sunday, Aug. 14.

Born May 16, 1924, he was the son of Howard J. and Ella K. Saturley of Pembroke, and brother to John, Lois, Lester, Margaret, Barbara and Florence. He attended Pembroke Academy, where he met the love of his life, Geraldine Fowler of Epsom.

He was a member of the "Greatest Generation," earning a Purple Heart for injuries received while on the battlefield in Belgium during World War II, repairing communication lines on the front line in the drive to Germany.

At home, the Concord Monitor erroneously reported he had been killed in action. Instead, he was transported home on a troop ship, suffering with shrapnel wounds in his thigh and wrist. The shrapnel remained embedded for the rest of his life.

He was told that he would lose the use of his wrist and hand, but he used a chain of small German coins that he had collected to manipulate his wrist and fingers throughout the return trip, saving the use of his hand. He often cited the incident as an example of professionals who give up too soon by overlooking the power of a positive personality to overcome obstacles. His grandchildren still have the coins.

Howard had the ability to see a need, the conviction to try to meet it and the energy to make it an adventure. He began his long and successful entrepreneurial career upon his return after the war, when he noted the great shortages of consumer items. Deciding that auctions could help solve the problem, he attended the Reppert School of Auctioneering in Auburn, Ind., in 1946 and began to polish a professional talent which he returned to numerous times during his adult life. He was a long time member of the NH Auctioneers Association.

His early businesses included several general stores and restaurants, among which were the Beanstalk Stores of Northwood, Chichester and Loudon, and Saturley's General Store and the Windmill Restaurant of Epsom.
He loved food and loved to cook for others. A self-taught chef, he and his wife introduced this region in the early-'60s to an "all-you-can-eat buffet" that attracted customers from three states.

His entrepreneurial pursuits led him to acquire and manage several lumber and manufacturing concerns, such as Industrial Box and Lumber of Kezar Falls, Maine, and Concord Lumber Co. in Concord; and multiple fuel and gasoline businesses, such as Hillsgrove Oil Co. of Epsom and Pittsfield, Industrial Products of Concord, O.H. Lewis Co. of Claremont, as well as W.B. Tripp of Cornish, Harbor Supply Oil Co. of Portland, Friend & Friend Oil Co. of Newport, R.C Whitney & Sons of Dexter and Greenville, McGillicudy Oil Co. of Houlton, Bailey Oil Co. of Madison, and Ballard Oil Co. of Portland, all in Maine. At one time his companies employed over 200 individuals, with locations in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. He was named Maine Oil Dealers' Oilman of the Year in 1982.

Howard and his lifelong partner, Gerry, claimed retirement on a couple of occasions, including the early-'70s, in Florida, when they practiced their real estate skills. In each instance, however, an opportunity too good to pass up drew them back into business.

Howard always cherished, appreciated and promoted education, within both the immediate and the extended family. Employees were encouraged to further their educational goals, whether within their profession or their own special interests, and accomplishments were rewarded with time off, scholarships and promotions. Howard proudly served as a member of the board of trustees at the New Hampton School.

Howard and Gerry were staunch supporters of civic, religious and charitable causes. He was a member of the American Legion, and the Masonic Lodge of Pittsfield. He served on numerous boards and committees. He strongly believed in giving back to his community. Appointed by Maine's then-Gov. Joe Brennan to serve as a board member of the Maine Energy Testing Laboratory, he grew concerned that the laboratory conducted its research in borrowed space at the Southern Maine Community College (SMTVI). In response, he funded and had built the W.B. Tripp Building to serve as a permanent home for the laboratory. At the dedication, Gov. Brennan noted that he now had a whole new qualification for all future gubernatorial appointees.

Howard was an admirer of Martin Luther King Jr., and honored him on his national holiday by encouraging all his employees to devote at least part of the day in service to others, for which they would be paid a full day's wage.

He loved politics and was an active participant in the political process. Though he never ran for political office, he was a great admirer of all who did. He was a supporter and friend to Joe Brennan, Maine Secretary of State Rodney Quinn, and U.S. Sen. George Mitchell.

His wife, Gerry, greatly influenced his life both personally and professionally. Always willing to join in his ventures, she taught him the great significance of women's roles far beyond the home, including the workplace, government and religion. Together, they held an annual Women's Advancement Seminar for all of their women employees, with speakers from academia, religion, politics and business.

He admired craftsmen, and learned from his father at an early age to appreciate people who brought great skill to their tasks. Whether Concord Lumber woodworkers, Ballard Oil journeymen, Harbor Supply ship captains, Windlass Restaurant chefs, Saturley's General Store butchers or McGillicuddy Oil truck drivers, he was in awe of those who practiced their art with passion.
Together Howard and Gerry proudly parented five children, Judy, Jim, Tom, Bill and Joe. All were taught the importance of work and were expected to participate on their weekends and school vacations in the family enterprises. From learning the art of meat cutting, short order cook, truck driver, salesmen, saw mill sawyer, to waiting on table, everyone was expected to assist. It was a true family business.

He made religion a vital part of his life wherever he and his family lived. From the New Rye Congregational Church, to Englewood and Spring Hill, Florida Methodist Churches, to Kezar Falls and Scarborough, Maine, Methodist churches, to (most recently) Suncook United Methodist Church, his booming baritone voice was welcomed by all.

Howard is predeceased by his daughter, Judy, and her son, Adam; and his siblings Lois, Lester, Margaret and Florence.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Geraldine of Concord; his four sons and their spouses, Jim and Vicky Saturley of Manchester, Tom Saturley and Ellie Baker of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Bill and Ellen Saturley of Concord, and Joe and Maggie Saturley of Bradenton, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, John Saturley of Chichester; and a sister and her husband, Barbara and Wendell Bassett of Epsom.
