Notes
General:
Deeds mention that Jude Allen was an original proprietor of Lot. #5, and if he lived in Greenland and paid taxes for 1727, should have drawn a lot. However, no Allen's appear as drawning either a home lot or a lot as taxpayer of Greenland. Just how they acquired their original land in Epsom remains a mystery. In any event, surviving deeds show their presence in Epsom.

John Mark Moses only mentions the following in his Epsom History: A deed of 1764 stated that home lot A No. 5 was originally of Jude Allen. According to the records, it was drawn by Noah Seavey. Allen may have owned or occupied it. A John Allen was in town in 1751. A Jude Allen was head of a family in 1790 and 'early settlers are mentioned in the records as follows: John Allen in 1751 and 1755; Jude Allen, 1779.' In his History of Northwood, Moses writes: There is a Charles Allen genealogy in N.E. Hist. & Gen. Register for 1902. I have never examined it; but I suspect it gives Allens of Epsom. A friend wrote me that it states that a Josiah (4) Allen, born May 31, 1744, in Greenland, married in 1779, Bathsheba Nelson, born June 30, 1755, daughter of James Nelson of Newmarket; had ten children, and died in Epsom. A Josiah Allen died in Epsom in 1821; and "Widow of Josiah Allen" died in Epsom March 8, 1850, aged 94; must have been the Bathsheba born June 30, 1755. I understand they lived down the Mountain road, next to Allenstown. Mother remembers, about 1853, two old maiden ladies and a widowed sister living there; Bathsheba and Lydia Allen and a Mrs. Graves. "Miss Lydia Allen" died in Epsom Aug. 30, 1869, aged 82. These ladies were very good people. Other Allen deaths in the Epsom record: Daniel Allen, May 1824; Jude Allen, Sept. 1828; his wife in 1827. Child of Josiah Allen in Deerfield Mch., 1827; child of Asael (?) Allen, in Deerfield, July, 1827. Louisa Allen June 23, 1843, aged 21.

A Ruth Allen of Epsom, m. Jonathan Fiske of Tuftonboro Sept. 20, 1803.

Polly Allen of Epsom m. Nathaniel Rollins of Deerfield, Jan. 23, 1804.

Jude Allen was of Epsom in 1779, and in 1790 with famiy 1-2-4. No Allen signed in Epsom in 1776. John Allen, yeoman, was of Epsom Feb. 11, 1775 (Deeds 107-300) and the town deeded him 50 acres of common land next Pittsfield, on consideration (this from memory) that he be responsible for the support of his father. John Allen, tythingman, Epsom, in 1751. Deeds 84-71 and 72, in 1764, state that Epsom Home Lot no.5, was originally of Jude Allen, but the proprieor's records did not assign that or any other lot to any Allen. I imagine that Allen had owned or occupied that lot, and that the Allen's are one of the very oldest families of Epsom, though I failed to find much about them. Guess the Allenstown Nelsons were connected with Bathsheba Allen.

Memorandum
The foregoing deed given under the following --- conditions that if the said Joseph P. Allen... does maintain & support or cause to be maintained and supported, Jude Allen & Olive his wife during each of their natural lives in a comfortable and decent manner, in providing a good warm house clothing, of every kind and every thing necessary and comfortable for their support both in sickness and in health and the privilege of a good home to reside at all times & the said Jude and Olive is to be provided for that they are to have the privilege of entertaining such friends as may call upon them agreeable to their own needs, and I the said Joseph to use & improve the above premises in a good husbandlike manner, to commit no waste but to keep the farm and buildings in good decent repair and pay all taxes that may at any time be assessed on said premises. Now if the said Joseph does perform each and every part of the above agreement according to the true meaning & intent thereof then the above deed to be void but in case of failure in any particular then to be and remain in full force and the said Jude and Olive his wife are to take possession of the premises aforesaid. Norwich VT Deeds, 5:113.

Deed Aug. 18, 1820 Windsor, VT; Jude Allen of Sharon, county of Windsor, VT to Solomon Downer of Sharon. A tract of land in Norwich, to wit, 50 acres - forty six acres being part of the third hundred of the original right of John Shackleford & also four acres of the undivided land belonging to the aforesaid John Shackleford's right & also a certain piece of land deeded by Ephraim Parker on the second day of April 1818 and on record in volume 5, page 62 in Norwich Book of Records..., being the farm I lately lived on in Norwich meaning to convey the best 50 acres in the whole... Norwich VT Deeds, 5:225.
June 1780, there are no further references to Jude Allen in Wakefield. At this point most genealogies shift this Jude Allen to Epsom....this is an error, as Jude, son of Jude, was already in Epsom with a family by the 1790 census.
Samuel Allen and sons Samuel Jr., Jude and Abner Allen on 1777 taxroll for Wakefield, NH. History of Carroll County, p. 479 mentions the Jude Allen home in the Dow District around East Pond. According to Elaine Morris, this would be around lots 88 or 89 in the 1st Division of lots in Wakefield, near current Canal Road which crosses the border into Shapleigh (now Acton) Maine. Thus the 1790 census for this Jude Allen in Sahpleigh, ME.
In 1793 he witnesses a deed for brother Samuel Allen Jr. (of Wakefield) and he later removes to Norwich, VT.
In 1799, Norwich Vt. records show Jude Allen a member of the new Baptist Church in that town.

The entry for son Jude is incorrect, as he is mentioned in the will of his mother Deborah Allen in 1753, as well as Jude his first born son. Therefore, he did not die young in 1751, and lived long enough to have a family. Jude and Elizabeth may have moved to Epsom with their family but more likely it was his son Jude (b. 1743), who married Sarah Philbrick and raised a family in Epsom, where he died 1828.

Simarily, Samuel, son of Jude and Deborah (Locke) Allen is mentioned in his mother's will with first born son Samuel. This Samuel Allen line removed to Wakefield, NH, where Samuel Jr., brother Jude (b. 1738) and Abner all resided and paid tax. Consequently, there are two Jude Allens during this period and through the 1790 US Census - one in Epsom, NH and one in Wakefield, NH/Shapleigh, Maine.

Most genealogies, following Locke's lead, have gone on to erroneously contributing the Jude Allen (1743-1828) of Epsom as the Jude being the second son of Samuel (Jude, Charles) Allen. Samuel, brother to Jude (Jude, Charles), settled in Wakefield, NH. [see will of Deborah (Locke) Allen for family]. Samuel's son Jude removed to Vermont by 1800 census.
