General Notes: Husband - Captain Thomas Lake

Arrived Portsmouth, NH 1748 age 14. Moved to Rye, then 1785 the family settled in Chichester, NH.
THOMAS LAKE facts from Speech by Marion Slater of Chichester, NH
Thomas Lake married Eunice on February of 1756 and ten years later, October 16, 1765, he bought land from Noah & Elizabeth Sherburne in Rye, on the road from Portsmouth to Mr. Seavey. [Note: Eunice married John Davis in 1756, not Thomas Lake, that was 1764]
Today the Portsmouth Naval Base is situated on what was Seavey's Island and it was there that Thomas Lake owned some land. Two or three years after that Thomas Lake bought land in New Castle where he obviously stayed and lived until 1784. In 1784 Eunice "Seavey" Davis' and John Davis' children were all over twenty years of age and I am certain her son, Samuel Davis, was at Epsom prior to this date; a most active man in Epsom's early records.
During Thomas Lake's twenty years of marriage to Eunice Seavey Davis in Rye and New Castle, they had eight children, James (2) who married Mehitable Berry, Thomas (2) who came here with his father. Thomas (2) came to Chichester a single man and married Rebecca Blake of Epsom on February 9, 1788. Rebecca died in 1832 and Thomas (2) will reads "my wife Martha", and I find he married Martha Stanyan late in life. His father remarried late in life also. He married Sally Dow in 1805, a widow of Mr. Joseph Dow after Eunice Seavey died in 1804. These men obviously needed cooks and housekeepers to the end.
Thomas (1) was age 51 when he came to Chichester in 1785 and had with him Thomas (2), age 17. He also had five other children; Anna, age 14, who married Capt. Morris and later Richard Rand; Martha, age 12, who married Jeremiah Sanborn; Robert, age 10, who married Hannah Blake, sister of his older brother's wife. Rebecca was only nine years old when she came to Chichester but she grew up and married Jonathan Leavitt in 1790. William (2) was Thomas (1) youngest son and was only four when they came. It was he who married Hannah True many years later, which firmly links the Lakes with the Longfellows of Deerfield and Sewells Falls and back to the colonial days in Massachusetts and England. On April 1, 1784, James Lock of Chichester, a cordwainer (shoemaker) deeded Thomas Lake 85 acres of land in Chichester for 190 lbs. Thomas Lake was styled a yeoman (farmer). This deed has no lot number except a reference to #6 in the 7th Range. With the abbutter by their names mentioned in this deed shows this land north of Lucille Randalls house except for 15 acres "purchased of Diar Hook with a house when said James Lock was living. Obviously, Thomas Lake moved into James Lock' s house and through hearsay came to Chichester in 1785. I find many reasons to think he was here to plant his garden by May 1, 1784. I have always thought Thomas (1) settled on the rise above and east of the Lake Tavern (Lucille Randall's) but probably I can never prove this.

General Notes: Wife - Eunice Seavey

THOMAS LAKE facts from Speech by Marion Slater, Chichester, NH
To Mention a little about Thomas (1) wife, Eunice Seavey, on March 28, 1753 in Rye, following the death of William Seavey (2), William Seavey (3) posted a bond for his sisters and brothers. They were Ruth, Mehitable, Paul, Mark and Eunice Seavey. This was two years before Eunice Seavey married John Davis.
In the 1760`s they were living in Rye - a Mr. John Davis and his wife, Eunice "Seavey" Davis. They were married February 18, 1756 and had four children baptized at the Rye-Newington Church. One son, William, died young. Hannah Davis was their only daughter, and their sons were Samuel Davis, later of Epsom, and David Davis, who lived in Cornish. John Davis died in 1763, leaving Eunice with four tiny children under six years of age.

THOMAS LAKE facts from Speech by Marion Slater of Chichester -
William (2) was Thomas (1) youngest son and was only four when they came. Birth in History of Pembroke gives 1806 on one page and 1810 on another. 1810 is most likely as he was age 68 at death.
