Locke Genealogy gives the year of birth as 1812 - Knowles Genealogy as Sept. 14, 1815. Locke also says she married a Nutter, but gives no first name, Knowles gives no marraige information. Neither have it all correct, but Locke has it closer. The headstone in the Knowles Cemetery where she is buried lists "Esther, wife of Samuel D., died Jan. 2, 1835, age 21 years, 3 months." This would give credence to the Locke marraige and the 1812 date of birth. Samuel D. Nutter than married her step sister Ruth (Jonathan Knowles and second wife Ruth Philbrick). A son, Charles D. Nutter, son of Samuel D. and Ruth M. is also buried in the Knowles Cemetery.

Her father died intestate, with no wife being mentioned, and his father Jonathan suggested that "brother-on-law" Samuel D. Nutter administer the will. On Jan. 22, 1850, a "minor over 14" petitioned that Francis Locke of Epsom, NH be her guardian, being the daughter of Josiah "late of Epsom, NH." In the 1850 census, Esther, age 16, was indeed with Francis and Mary Locke.
