Be it remembered that at the Court of Common Pleas holden at Concord within and for the County of Merrimack on the third Tuesday of October AD 1857

The Hon. J. W. Sargent, presiding justice
JOHN THOMAS COTTERILL of Epsom in said County, a free white person and an alien upon application to be admitted a citizen of the United States and upon due consideratin of said Application and of the evidence submitted in support thereof, was admitted to take and thereupon in open court did take subscribe the oath of Allegiance and Abjration prescribed by the laws of the United States and was there upon duly admitted a citizen of the United States.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of said Court this 21 day of October AD 1857. N.Butler, Clerk.

To the Honorable the Justices of the Court of Common Pleas holden at Concord in the County of Merrimack on the third Tuesday of October AD 1857, Respectfully represents John Thomas Cotterell non resident in Epsom in said County a free white person an alien and subject of the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland that he resided in the United States three years next preceding his arriving at the age of twenty one years on the 29th day of August 1856 and has continued to reside therein to the present time; that for three years last past it has been a bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States of America and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate or Sovereignty whatever and particularly to the Queen and Government of Great Britain and Ireland, that he has resided within the State of New Hampshire for more than one year last past and that during his said residence in the United State he has behaved as a man of good moral character attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States and well-disposed to the good order and happiness of the same. That he has never born any hereditary ___ or been of any of the orders of nobility, wherefore he prays that he may be permitted to take the oaths by law prescribed and may be admitted by the court a citizen of the United States of America. - John Thomas Cotterell

Brown, both of Epsom in the county of Merrimack do solemnly depose and testify that we are native citizens of the United States and have severally been well acquainted with John Thomas Cotterell now resident at Epsom in said County of Merrimack who immigrated to the United State from Chittenham England as we are informed and believe and we know that he has resided in the United State more than five years last past in the State of New Hampshire more than one year last past, that is to say at Epsom in the County of Merrimack from September tenth, AD 1852 to the present time: that said John Thomas Cotterell was as we are informed and believe, a minor under the age of eighteen years at his arrival in the United States and resided therein for more than three years next preceding his arriving at the age of twenty one years and that for three years last past it has been bona fide his untention to become a citizen of the United States; and during said whole time he has according to our best knowledge and belief behaved as a man of good moral character attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same. - Thos.
