Left Epsom, NH at age 23 for the Gold Rush in California. After mining a bit he turned his attention to logging and cofounded the Dolbeer and Carson Lumber Company, one of the most famous Humboldt County, CA, redwood lumber companies. He also invented the Dolbeer Steam Logging Donkey. At a visit back to Epsom, NH in 1900, he agreed to send enough redwood to furnish the inside and outside of a new Library building in Epsom, NH. The library was built within a couple years on land donated by Charles Sumner Hall across from the Gossville Hotel.

They resided at 828 Lombard, St., San Francisco, CA.

From the San Franciso Chronicle 7/10/1904, p. 40)

"When Bertha Dolbeer and her brother, Chase Dolbeer, were little children, their mother, a suffering invalid, impressed with the idea that she could not get well and was an unnecessary trial to those about her, slipped into an attic room and quietly put an end to the suffering that so long had been hers"

She committed suicide by shooting herself with a pistol.
