General Notes: Husband - James Gilbert Marshall

Resident of Portland, ME at time of marriage, occupation, machinist. A James G. Marshall died in Boston, MA 1905

From the Brooklyn Eagle 1885, Sept. 27
Mr. James G. Marshall, paymaster of the Boott corporation, has in his possession an interesting relic of the Revolutionary War. It is a leaf from the manifest of the English Ship William and Anne, which was captured by one of Paul Jone's cruisers. Mr. Marshall was visiting in Epsom, NH, this summer where Dustin Clark of this city owns a farm. Mrs. Clark's grandfather, who commanded a vessel under Paul Jones, captured the William and Anne, probably early in 1779. The family have had several relics of this capture, and Mr. Marshall was presented with this leaf, pages 30 and 31. It bears the date November 27, 1778, and a dozen or more small entries of articles consigned to persons, presumibly Tories, on this side of the water. The prices charged against these articles, in pounds, shillings and pence, make one open his eyes and recollect stories about the prices which the early California miners had to pay for provisiions. A few of the prices are given, reduced to United States money: Flour, $150 a barrell; pork, $100 a barrell; peas $12 a bushel; rum, $13 a gallon; butter, $1.25 a pound. This leaf is slightly discolored with age, but is remarkably well preserved. Itis not ruled, except for dollars and cents, but the writing is as even almost as though printed, and as clear and as easily read. - Lowell Courier.
[Mrs. Marshall's grandfather was Levi Robinson]
