From an article on her 95th Birthday - Mrs. Mary L. Cass
Mr. Mary L. Cass, one of the remarkably smart old ladies of whom Epsom, NH is justly proud, celebrated her 95th birthday, September 9th (1916), at her home in this town of which she has been a life-long resident. Many friends called to express congratulations and innumerable rememberances were received. Mrs. Cass is the daughter of the late William and Lucretia (Gray) Brown, being the only surviving member of the family, her brother C.J. Brown and sister, Mrs. Susan Forbes, a wealthy resident of South Byfield, Mass., passing away several years ago. The birthplace of Mrs. Cass is the house now owned by John Brown on North road, and after attending district school, education was completed at Pittsfield Academy. Mrs. Cass became a teacher in the public schools and at one time was employed in the Pemberton Mills at Lowell, Mass.. for many years she was engaged in nursing, continuing a noble work as long as health and strength permitted. Mrs. Cass has endeared herself to nearly every family in town by her ready sympathy and willingness to releive suffering. Mrs. Cass is the widow of Joseph Blake Cass to whom she was united in marriage, September 23, 1847. The four children of the union, Mrs. Kate Cook of Salem, Mass., Mrs. Elizabeth Bixby and Mrs. Mary Philbrick of this town are all living. Aside from rheumatism Mrs. Cass is in perfect health bodily and mentally. She retains a good memory and keeps informed on all the events of the day, deriving much enjoyment from the reading of books, papers and magazines and attending to her correspondence. Her reminincences of historical matters are very entertaining.
