General:

He is said to have been the first person buried in the old cemetery, referred to as the "burying place" in records of Aug. 14, 1761. He was highway surveyor for the town in 1756 and was a cooper. The family lot was one originally granted to Simon Knowles, and was deeded by William Sr. to his sons John and Amos who sold it to Andrew McClary. William Jr. returned to Greenland, the others to Pittsfield and finally, Amos & John to Maine. Folsom Family Genealogy gives a Capt. William, son of Amos and Joanna Libby, grandson of Amos. This is probably an error and should be grandson of this William. It further tells "..of Bordeaur, France, who emigrated to Greenland, NH.

Greenland Baptism records give years only for Judith, John, Jonathan, Thomas, Sarah and Mehitable. Records also indicate that a daughter died Oct. 1, 1744. It is possible that Amos and William were born in Portsmouth, as William and wife Catherine were "of Portsmouth" in 1732. He bought land in Epsom, NH 1746, and by 1756 lived there and sons William, Amos and John were all old enough to hold town offices.
