Special to the Union - Epsom, NH, Dec. 27, (1943) - A well-known retired peach and apple farmer, James Eugene Philbrick, 82, who exported many carloads of the fruIt to England each year, died today at a Concord convalescent home. Thousands of people used to visit this town to see the large prosperous peach and apple orchards on Sanborn Hill, where Philbrick harvested many thousands of bushels of the fruit. In the fall of 1942 there was considerable publicity about Mr. Philbrick when he was lost for three days and three nights. He had gone blue-berrying and failed to return. While a large posse searched the woods for him he lived on a couple of sandwiches he had taken along and picked berries for nourishment. He was born in Allenstown, NH on March 20, 1861, the son of Jackson C. and Elizabeth A. (Crawford) Philbrick, but lived most of his life in this town. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Emma J. Bickford of Epsom, NH and Mrs. Elizabeth Philbrick of Concord; a brother, Robert Philbrick of Concord, and nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Epsom, NH Baptist Church with the pastor Rev. Donald E. macomber conducting the rites. Burial will be in the family lot in New Rye cemetery.
