'Sarah and Willard WILLIAMS appeared on the census of 1840 at Concord, Merrimack, NH, USA; The 1840 census shows Willard (actually 'Williard') Williams as the head of the Family. There was one male between 20 and 29 (this would be Willard). No other males. There were two females. One was between 10 and 14, the other was between 15 and 19. The latter woman would be Sarah, Willard' s wife. Sarah and Willard were just married this year. She would be about 18 or 19 years old. The census says there were only the 3 of them in the household. Only one person was employed (no doubt Willard), and that was as a Manufacturer or Tradesman.

Sarah and Willard WILLIAMS lived on 7 May 1840 at Concord, Merrimack, NH, USA. , , , ,

Sarah and Willard were still in Concord, NH for the 1850 census. (Sarah is listed as Sarah H.) Also listed is daughter Sarah E. Daughter Emma was born and died this year but does not appear on the census. Willard is 36, his wife is 28 , and his daughter is 7. Willard is listed as a Coach Trimmer (fits with his death record). His Real Estate is valued at $4,000. According the the census, he was born in Mass, his wife and daughter were both born in NH. His daughter did not attend school that year.

Also in the household is Frank Pierce, his wife Jane and son Benj. F. This would be the future President of the US, Franklin Pierce. (See the "Witness" tag for more info.)

One neighbor is a Coach Maker, the other is a Coach Manufacturer. It stands to reason that they probably all worked together. The neighbors' names are also interesting. The Coach Maker's name is Lewis Downing, age 58, born in Mass. Willard has a sister named Catherine Downing Williams. The Coach Manufacturer's name is Jos. Stephen Abbott, age 50, born in Maine. Willard's mother was an Abbot. Also, Jos. Stephen Abbott's wife's name is Grace. Willard named his last daughter Grace Abbot Williams. Maybe, Downing and Abbott were friends/relations with Willard's parents somehow, and Willard joined the 'group Coach business'. They all moved from Mass to NH and lived near each other and probably near their shop. Willard's aunt Katy Williams married a Thomas Downing in 1799. Perhaps Lewis Downing is a brother of Thomas Downing's (too old to be a son, too young to be the father)? '
