Notes
General:
From Gove Genealogy- "When 28, she was engaged to be married to Seth Hurd of Gonic. A friend of hers, Miss Mary Foss of Barrington, of about Ruth's age, was also engaged. June 15, 1857, they hired a horse and open buggy of Richard Savory, a stable keeper in Gonic, to go to Rochester Center to purchase their trouseaus. A mutual lady fried was with them when they returned. As they neared the bridge over Cocheco River, they overtook a man trundling a wheel-barrow, on which was a long stick of timber. As the man turned out, the forward end of the timber reared threateningly. The horse was frightened and ran. Upon the bridge, the carriage struck the low guard rail, and the Misses Gove and Foss plunged into the river, but the other lady saved herself by catching hold of the rail. A young man, named Philander Varney, saw the young women in the river, trying to save themselves, and endeavored to go to their rescue, but his father would not permit him to enter the water. Both ladies were drowned."
