Book 11, 367 Jan 3, 1825 JOHN of Thetford has deeded to him by heirs of James part of the land on which James lived -- Elizabeth [Betty Carswell, widow of James Sr.?], Esther, James [Jr.?], Dolly Shepherd, SALLY WALLACE and Mary Godfrey -- for $5 [to each of them?] witnesses Samuel Niles & Mary Godfrey

Birth date unknown, but his penion papers filed by his widow, shows he entered the service in 1777, to be about 18 years of age, this date is given.

James Sr. died in 1821, his spouse and son James moved to Waterbury, VT. The above deed apparently is part of the estate settling land to John of Thetford, who by later deed appears to be a brother to James Jr., and son of James Sr. Children placed in order as seen in deed with the exception of John.

Book 12, p 268, John Godfrey to James Godfrey: Know all men by these presents that I John Godfrey of Thetford in the County of Orange & State of Vermont in consideration of one hundred dollars to me in hand paid on the delivery[?] hereof by James Godfrey of said Thetford do hereby remiss release and forever quit claim unto the said James Godfrey & to his heirs & assigns forever the following described land lying in said Thetford Viz. thirty acres same more or less & is the same land conveyed by a deed from James (father to the parties to this deed) to the said James Godfrey dated Feby 3rd AD 1820 & recorded in this Registry of said Thetford Book 10th Page 437-438. Also the land heretofore deeded by David Howe to the said James & by him to me To have & To hold the same to him the said James Godfrey & to his heirs & assigns forever. In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand this 10th day of May AD 1830. the words "to the said James & by him to me" [word?] before signing.


Book 11 page 367, January 3, 1825, quitclaim deed: Elizabeth Godfrey, Esther Godfrey, James Godfrey, Dolly Shepherd, Sally Wallace & Mary Godfrey of Thetford, for $5, "have demised, released, and by these presents for us & our heirs do demise, release & forever quitclaim unto the said John Godfrey his heirs & assigns forever all the right Title Interest property estate & demand which we the said undersigned have in & to a certain tract piece or parcel of land lying & being situate in Thetford . . . viz. twenty Acres of Land off the West end of a Lot of Land deeded to James Godfrey by Beriah Loomis Jr. & Thomas Jones by their deed bearing date April 1st 1816 it being part of the lot of land on which the said Godfrey lived at his Decease."

James has papers as part of his mother's filing for rights to Jame's Sr.'s Revolutionary War Pension, whereupon he states he is of Waterbury, VT, son of James and Elizabeth Godfrey. Paper field Jan. 21, 1852, parents both deceased. In a deposition of 1841, he gives his age as 38.
