John Mark Moses in his History of Northwood "A Thomas Piper, hatter, with wife Susannah, was of Stratham in 1766. He came from Newmarket to Northwood in 1778. In March, 1788, Northwood voted that 'Thomas Piper the hatter's rates shall be given forever.' Julu 21, 1788, Susannah Piper of Northwood married Joseph Huckins of Gilmanton, he then an old man. The History of Gilmanton says that Thomas Piper of Newmarket had two sons and a daughter that settled in that ton, and that his widow married Joseph Huckin's of Gilmanton. [NOTE: this may be a different Thomas Piper, as they were settled there while this Thomas, the hatter, was still in Northwood]. A Hatter's shop was mentioned in 1797 as being on the land now owned by Miss Abbie Hill."
