General Notes: Husband - Moses Avery

Gravestone rubbing of Jason Randall Avery, done in the Avery Cemetery, Ellsworth, NH, gives age at death of 65, died Nov. 5, 1826, putting birth year as 1761.

From the New Hampshire Genealogical Record, article by George F. Sanborn, Jr., F.A.S.G.

Moses Avery was born in Nottingham, N.H., a son of Benjamin and Mehitable (?Blake) Avery, and lived for many years in Barnstead, N.H., before settling in Ellsworth, N.H., where he and his wife died. She was Elizabeth [Betsey] Colbath, daughter of Pitman and Jane (Hodgdon) Colbath of Portsmouth, N.H. The Moses Avery family Bible was copied many years ago by one of my Avery relatives, perhaps by my great-grandfather Avery's sister, the late Mary Helen "Nellie" (Avery) Tarlson of The Weirs, N.H., now a part of the City of Laconia and called Weirs Beach. What became of the original Bible is not known, nor is it known where the Bible was when it was copied. I am in possession of the transcription of it, which itself is rather old. Following is a verbatim copy of the transcription which presumably follows the format of the original record. Nicknames are used below for four of the children: Jennie's name was actually Jane; Tempy's correct name was Temperance; Polly was a nickname for Mary; and Betsy was named Elizabeth, like her mother, who was also often called Betsy. These children were born in Barnstead; their mother was born in Portsmouth, and the parents were married in the latter place.

Rev. War Declaration for Land Warrant by Betsey Avery of vermont, dated Sept 13, 1855, she is age 93 and ways she married Moses Avery at Newington, NH on the 23rd of August 1787 and that he died at Ellsworth,NH on the fifth day of November 1826.

Rev. War pension filing by his widow gives his death as November 5, 1825, in a declaration dated October 1838
.
John Jenkins 65 of Barnstead, deposed on behalf of the widow of Moses Avery, that he was aquainted with Moses Avery from the year 1795, that Moses then resided in Barnstead and resided there until the year 1801 at which time the said Moses Avery removed to Ellsworth.

Son Stephen, age 50, Oct. 30, 1838, says he attended the funeral and Moses died "on the fifth day of November 1825"

Israel Avery, brother to Moses says in 1838 that he died about 13 years ago at Ellsworth, NH.

General Notes: Wife - Betsey Colbath

aka Elizabeth. Information from "Newington, New Hampshire Families in the Eighteenth Century by Henry W. Harden. Her brother John settled in Barnstead, NH.

Ebenezer Nutter of Barnstead, age 82 in1838, deposed on behalf of Betsey Avery's Rev. War pension, that he was well aquinated with Betsey Avery from early youth, that her maiden name was Betsey Colbat, daughter of Pitman Colbath late of Newington, that she was married to Moses Avery (then of Barnstead and late of Ellsworth) at her father's dwelling house in Newington by the Reverend Joseph Buckminster, pastor of North Church of Portsmouth.

John Colbath of Barnstead, likewise also deposed, aged 72 years, that he was well aquianted with Betsey Avery, she being a sister, that she was married to Moses Avery on 23rd day of August 1787 at her father's house in Newington, that he was present at the time and saw them married by Rev. Joseph Buckminster. His wife Lettice Colbath of Barnstead deposed the same.

There are online many errors including her being the daughter of Benjamin F. Colbath b. 1720 in Portsmouth and wife Sarah W. Downing and marriage 1779 to Moses Avery......others to a Matthias Nutter (1788).

Died Aug. 11, 1861, 97 years, 10 months.

See note in marriage info.

Notes: Marriage

Note of George F. Sanborn "The assertion that Matthias Nutter married Elizabeth/Betsey Colbath, daughter of Pitman and Jane (Hodgdon) Colbath of Newington - This Betsey Colbath actually married Moses Avery of Barnstead, and lived and died in Ellsworth, New Hampshire."

Date of marriage from Rev. War Pensiion filing by his widow. Ebenezer Nutter was in attendance at the wedding, which was held at the home of her father, Pitman Colbath.

1826 Pension filing of Betsey Avery, aged 93 of Vermont, states she was married to Moses Avery at Newington,NH August 23. 1787, and that he name before he said marriage was Betsey Colbath, that her husband died on the 5th day of November 1826.
