The 1900 Census shows his mother with her second spouse, Charles H. Swain in Concord, NH, with 3 children, Rena M., Charles L. and Eva. Births in that census are the following all with the last name Swain. Though they are living with their step father, the census taker gave the two older children the wrong last name - it should be Roberts. Eva, the only one of the children born after 1891 with the likely widowed Emma (Langley) Roberts married Charles Swain.

The World War II draft card, Lester (no middle) Roberts, of Lenox, MA, born Epsom, NH Dec. 23, 1883 and Mrs. Laura D. Roberts. The date on the draft card matches that of Charles L. in the 1900 census, so Charles L. and Lester are one in the same.

1910 US Census Gloucester, MA in household of Eli Jackman, Lester Roberts, son in law, age 26, hotel manager, and Lucy (wife) daughter of Eli Jackman. Lester born NH as well as his parents.

Name on the birth record of son Frank L. in Gloucester is C. Lester Roberts.

This it would appear, shows he made a trip to Los Angeles, and got entered into the census a second time. The age, occupation, and birth in New Hampshire shows again that Charles Lester Roberts and Lester Roberts are one in the same person.
