Home Lot # 7

The next few home lots heading west are past the meetinghouse lot which was the dividing line between East Street and West Street The original proprietor of this lot was Samuel Dowst, though it does not appear as though he ever settled on it. It contains what is the newer portion of the McClary Cemetery and runs down past Cass Pond. The lot sold, along with the 30 acre out lot, to Nathaniel Huggins who later sold it to Joseph Baker of Durham, with a deed stating it was the original lot of Samuel Dowst. Baker sold it to Ephraim Locke in 1747. Historian John Mark Moses, in his Early Settlers of Epsom, gives a brief synopsis:

“He was from Rye, son of Francis3, Edward2, John1, November 27. 1747, when only seventeen years old, he bought home lot No. 7, on the north side of East Street. His marriage did not occur until May 14. 1752; the lady was Comfort Dowst, daughter of Ozem, son of Samuel of Newcastle. Probably he had spent much of the preceding four years in Epsom clearing land and preparing his home. He lived in town for the remainder of his life and was prominent in town and church affairs. At the time of his death, which occurred in March or May 1798, he had the home lot west of the cemetery, over a part of which the cemetery has since been extended. His son Francis died in Epsom in 1835 and his wife, Mary, in October, 1818, 'in her fifty-eighth year'. Their home in 1803 was where the crossroad joins the main road west of the cemetery.”

Ephraim Locke deeded the home lot of 50 acres on which he was living to his son Francis in 1789.

Francis Locke built a grist mill near Cass Pond, and in 1803, made an agreement with John Chesley, Daniel Philbrick, Jr., John Drowne and Philip Stevens, to utilize the mill privilege on this cross road. A sawmill and gristmill were built. According to an article on Epsom water power, Hiram A. Holmes, wrote that the lease was for 20 years, but soon after the contract the mills were closed and allowed 'to go down.' The property and privilage was sold to Edwin Dearborn who sold out to George W. Batchelder about 1846 and the saw mill privilege was sold to Hiram A. Holmes by Batchelder in 1865.

In 1811 Bennett Lawrence of Epping bought a right near the mills for a carding and fulling mill. Again, Holmes adds that Lawrence,'was running a hat factory with water across the road from the dam.' Bennett Lawrence died suddenly, and his brothers sold the mill to Edward D. Lord. This property was later sold by Lord to Joseph B. Cass, where he built a house next to the mill. According to Homlms, 'J.B. Cass took out the machinery and put in a lathe for making bobbins for the Lowell cotton factories. He continued running the carding mill for many years'. He sold two acres to John Chesley and in 1810 sold 14 acres, adjoining land of Simon A. Heath, to Thomas D. Merrill. This parcel bordered the old burying ground, and it is here Merrill established his store and business and resided for about 40 years. The well rock is still in the middle of the road through the cemetery. This area is currently part of the McClary Cemetery.

In 1804, Francis Locke deeded the northern part of Lot. No. 7 on the other side of the Little Suncook river to his son Ephraim (later Deacon) with an additional 2 acres one year later. Here Ephraim lived and died, with his son Ephraim living, according to the 1858 map, next door. His son likely inherited his father's homestead and sold it to Jackson C. Philbrick in 1873, Ephraim having moved to Suncook the following year.

In 1813, Francis Locke deeded to son Francis “all the land I own in Epsom with the buildings standing thereon, including one half of the Grist and saw mill.” Along with this was an indenture to care for his mother and sister Comfort should they outlive his father. His mother died and his father Francis remarried and died in 1835.

One other parcel of this lot was sold by Francis Locke to Edwin Dearborn, where Locke apparently lived, as it was sold with land and buildings. It was occupied for many years by Hiram A. Holmes who sold it to Elizabeth Bixby. Her heirs at law sold the property of Ellsworth Blake Philbrick, son of Maurice C. and Mary Parsons (Cass) Philbrick.
